What type of flooring should I choose?

Many home renovation projects include the question, What type of flooring should I choose? If you’re redoing the flooring in your home, there are lots of things to consider. Maybe you’re going from carpeting to hard flooring, or from hard flooring to carpet. Be wild and go from carpet to just new carpet. Regardless, we thought it would be helpful to break down all of your options and some of the things to consider when looking into such a major purchase.

Here are the flooring main characters:

  1. Hardwood
  2. Engineered Wood
  3. Bamboo
  4. Laminate
  5. Linoleum
  6. Cork
  7. Ceramic
  8. Carpet
  9. Stone
  10. Vinyl
  11. Polished Concrete

Before you make an official decision, there are other things to consider, including:

  1. Durability – this might be the most important factor!
  2. Installation – installing certain flooring costs more than others
  3. Cleaning – you need to know if your cleaning methods are going to change.
  4. Cost – there are major differences between some of these options!
  5. Soundproofing (do you need it?)
  6. Carpet padding types (if applicable)

The type of room you’re going to be installing into matters as well. Kitchen floors have different needs than, say, a bedroom floor. Where should flooring be waterproof? Where should flooring be warmer vs cooler? It seems like too much to think about it, but if you go at it methodically, you’ll have an end result you are truly happy with. The article that we reference above also has some great info like cost calculators, a FAQ section, and some top companies for flooring purchases.
